Description

This session studies the opportunities for e-assessment in language teaching. Different assessment tools will be introduced. Participants will have hands on opportunities to explore several tools for e-assessment. Participants will evaluate e-assessment applications and explore them in their own teaching context.

 

Target Audience

Language teachers who are interested in exploring e-assessment tools.

 

 

Week by week outline

Week 1

 

Participants will introduce themselves to others, exchanging views on assessment practice and sharing experience in using assessment tools. Particpants also have the opportunity to be familiar with feature of Yahoo Groups and wikispaces.

 

Week 2

In this week, participants will be introduced to Easy Test Maker and Survey Monkey. Particpants will also read an article "Using eLearning tools for assessment purposes". There are two activites in this week. The first activity is to response to the article and discuss with other participants. The second activity is to post their feedback after they have explored the Easy Test Maker and Survey Monkey.

 

Week 3

In week 3, we will investigate Quia and Quiz Centre. Some sample Quia sites will be given for illustration. Participants will post their feedback on the Quia and Quiz centre. We will set up a sychnronous chat to discuss different assessment tools with our guest speaker, Dafne Gonzalez. She will share her experience in using various e-assessment tools.

 

Week 4

Week 4 begins with an article "Understanding Rubrics, by Heidi Goodrish Andrade". Two rubric generators, Rubistar and Rubric Maker will be introduced to participants. Participants will evalaute the rubric generators.

 

Week 5

Final project

Set an e-assessment task which fit into the participant’s own teaching context.

 

Week 6

 

Sharing outcome of the project and evalution of this session.

 

Communication media:

Yahoo Group will be the homepage of the EVO. Discussion will be conducted through YG. A Wiki will be used for collaborating online.

Moderators

Hyman Wong completed the Principles and Practice of Online Teaching Program in 2005. He holds an MA in Applied Linguistics from HKU. He has taught English as a Second Language in a secondary school. Currently, he works in the field of IT in Education for the Hong Kong Government, promoting the use of IT in teaching and learning. He teaches at City Univeristy of Hong kong on part-time basis. hymanwong@gmail.com

 

Anne Koorey is an ESL teacher at the Adult Migrant English Service in Sydney, Australia. She teaches online and blended learning courses and is involved in producing online resources for ESL students across the programmes. She has participated in EVO workshops for a few years and co-moderated a Blogging workshop during EVO 2006. Anna has a Graduate Certificate in Multimedia and Online Learning, a Master's degree in Computers in Education, as well as Certificate III in Information Technology. aas56@yahoo.com

 

Hana Prashker is presently an instructor and technical support person in the ESL department in a community college in New Jersey, USA. She has taught ESL from Kindergarten through graduate school, as well as all skills and levels of ESL. Hana has also completed the TESOL Certificate in Online Programs. hprashker@pccc.edu
